At St Monica’s, we are committed to living out our mission of “Success for All in a Christ-Centred Community.” We believe that caring for God’s creation is part of our call as Catholics and as global citizens. Our Eco Warriors play an important role in helping us to care for the environment and to inspire everyone in our school community to live more sustainably.
Our Eco Warriors are pupils who take on the special responsibility of caring for our school environment and promoting respect for God’s world. They help us to think, act and pray in ways that show love for Creation, reflecting our Catholic belief that the Earth is a gift from God and that we are called to be its stewards.
Eco Warriors are democratically elected by their classmates, supporting the British value of democracy. Each class has one Eco Warrior who represents the views of their peers, shares ideas and helps to make decisions that benefit the whole school. While each class has a representative, we believe that everyone in our school community has a responsibility to help protect our world.
Our Eco Warriors come from across the school and are enthusiastic about making a difference. They bring energy, creativity and kindness to their role and act as positive role models for others. Whether they are monitoring energy use, promoting recycling or helping to care for our outdoor spaces, our Eco Warriors work hard to ensure that St Monica’s is a place where God’s creation is valued and well cared for.

At St Monica’s, we strive to live our faith through actions that make a positive difference. Eco Warriors help us to:
Understand the importance of caring for the environment as part of our Catholic mission
Encourage the whole school to make eco-friendly choices
Share ideas, voice concerns and work together
Develop teamwork, leadership and responsibility — qualities that reflect our Gospel values

Our Eco Warriors have been very busy this year and have taken part in a wide range of activities to support sustainability across the school.
Recycling
Recycling has been a key focus for our Eco Warriors. They visited the local recycling centre to learn more about waste management and then led a whole-school Recycling Week. During this week, they helped their classes learn how to reduce waste and recycle correctly and worked with staff to secure new recycling bins for the school.
Activities during Recycling Week included:
Junk modelling
Designing recycling posters
Writing instructions on how to recycle correctly
Writing persuasive letters to the council about pollution in rivers (linked to Geography)
Creating acrostic poems about recycling
To further promote reducing waste, the Eco Warriors also organised a Christmas Jumper Swap Shop, encouraging families to reuse pre-loved jumpers and reduce textile waste during the festive season.

Caring for Our School Environment
Eco Warriors also:
Lead assemblies to encourage everyone to follow our eco-friendly practices
Share ideas from eco meetings with their peers and teachers
Plant trees and flowers and help care for them by watering and promoting the use of peat-free soil

Lead by example and support the whole school to make environmentally responsible choices
Take part in an eco audit around the school with Learning Through Landscapes (LtL)

Inspire teachers to complete professional development focused on sustainability with LtL
Watch our VLOG below, created by our Year 6 Eco Warrior representatives, sharing highlights from our recent trip to the recycling centre.
