Admissions to St Monica’s Catholic Primary School

St Monica’s is a happy, welcoming Catholic primary school in the heart of Bootle. We are delighted when families consider joining our school and are here to help you through the admissions process. We welcome applications from families of all faiths, cultures and backgrounds: everybody is welcome to join our school family. On this page, you will find out how to apply for a place in our very popular Nursery and Reception for your child.

Why not come and visit us?

Choosing a school is an important decision for all families, and we would love you to see St Monica’s for yourself.

We offer school tours during the autumn term, giving parents and carers an opportunity to meet our team, explore the school and ask questions. Please telephone the school office on 0151 525 1245 to arrange a visit with a member of our Headteacher, Mr Gouldbourne.

Applying for Reception — September 2027

The closing date for Reception applications is 15 January 2027. Here is a copy of our Admissions Policy.

If you live in Sefton, apply through Sefton Council’s school admissions website. If you live outside Sefton, apply through your own local authority, even if you would like your child to attend St Monica’s.

    Step 1: Submit Your Application
    • Follow the link to the Citizen Portal on Sefton’s admissions website. New users will need to register; existing users should check that their contact details and home address are correct.
    • Select your school preferences and submit your application before the closing date. Keep your login details so that you can view your child’s offer on 16 April 2027.
Step 2: Complete the Supplementary Faith Form, if Applicable
    • If you would like your application to be considered under the school’s faith criteria, please complete the Supplementary Faith Form.
    • Provide your child’s baptismal certificate or other supporting evidence specified in the admissions policy.
Step 3: Return Supporting Documents to School

    Applying for a Nursery Place

If you would like your child to join our Nursery, please contact the school office to request an application form. You can enquire at any time during the school year: finance.stmonicas@schools.sefton.gov.uk.

Please return the completed form with:

    • Your child’s original full birth certificate.
    • Proof of baptism, if applicable.
    • Proof of your home address, such as a recent utility bill.

For children offered a place, we normally contact families in April for a September start or October/November for a January start, depending on available places.

A place in our Nursery does not guarantee a place in Reception. You must submit a separate Reception application using the process above. Reception places are allocated in accordance with the school’s published admissions criteria.

Joining St Monica’s During the School Year

If you are moving into the area or would like your child to transfer to St Monica’s, please contact Sefton School Admissions on 0151 934 3590 for advice about available places and the application process.

Visit Sefton’s in-year admissions and school transfers page for guidance and application forms.

Our school office is also happy to help with questions about joining St Monica’s.

    Admissions Policies

Our admissions policies explain how applications are considered and how places are allocated when there are more applications than places available.

Admission Outside the Normal Age Group

If you are considering requesting a place outside your child’s normal age group, please contact the school to discuss your circumstances and read Sefton’s guidance on Reception admissions outside the normal age group.

    Appealing an Admissions Decision

If your child is not offered a place at St Monica’s, you have the right to appeal. Appeals are arranged through the Archdiocese of Liverpool and heard by an independent appeal panel.

To begin the process, complete the Archdiocese’s online appeal form.

Please visit the Archdiocese’s admissions and appeals page for guidance and the relevant appeals timetable.
